Breaking records

During this summer of 2023, the world has broken records. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), June was the hottest month globally on record. July is shaping up to be right on its heels for extreme global heat. News outlets around the world are reporting devasting temperatures, as well as catastrophic flooding and wildfires. The Earth’s accelerated heating has affected hundreds of millions of people on most of the world’s continents. Here is an excerpt from World Weather Attribution.org, which is comprised of an international group of climate scientists who measure how much climate change influences extreme weather events. https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/

“July 2023 saw extreme heatwaves in several parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including the Southwest of the US and Mexico, Southern Europe and China. Temperatures exceeded 50C on the 16th of July in Death Valley in the US as well as in Northwest China (CNN,2023). Records were also reached in many other weather stations in China and the all-China heat record was broken in Sanbao on the 16th of July. In Europe, the hottest ever day in Catalunya was recorded and highest-ever records of daily minimum temperature were broken in other parts of Spain. In the US, parts of Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico tied their all time high, parts of Arizona, Cayman Islands, highest ever night time temperatures in Phoenix Arizona which also had its record for longest time without falling below 90F/32.2C.”

The scientists’ main findings:

North America, Europe and China have experienced heatwaves increasingly frequently over the last years as a result of warming caused by human activities, hence the current heat waves are not rare in today’s climate with an event like the currently expected approximately once every 15 years in the US/Mexico region, once every 10 years in Southern Europe, and once in 5 years for China.
Without human induced climate change these heat events would however have been extremely rare. In China it would have been about a 1 in 250 year event while maximum heat like in July 2023 would have been virtually impossible to occur in the US/Mexico region and Southern Europe if humans had not warmed the planet by burning fossil fuels.

Unless the world rapidly stops burning fossil fuels, these events will become even more common and the world will experience heatwaves that are even hotter and longer-lasting. A heatwave like the recent ones would occur every 2-5 years in a world that is 2°C warmer than the preindustrial climate.

Summer heat in the northern hemisphere will continue for at least six or more weeks. The people living around and above the equator can expect more extreme heat and weather events in the weeks ahead. Of course, some people, especially those whose work demands to be outside, are being adversely affected. Heat-related deaths have been reported in many countries, while the full extent of casualties won’t be known until later. And we have barely begun the 2023 hurricane season here in the United States.

Dear Readers, I know this information is at once sobering and possibly terrifying to some. Others have become climate-numb, to the point that they can no longer feel emotions when hearing of extreme weather catastrophes. Others are somehow incredibly still unable to accept the plain truth of our common situation. Yet the facts are strewn across our planet every day this summer: human-caused carbon emissions are responsible for the accelerated heating of our atmosphere, and the cascading effects are everywhere, from ice shelves melting on both the Arctic and Antarctic, to the ocean currents changing and slowing. We are living through ever greater extremes of temperatures and the resulting consequences.

What of the future Earth and its effects on humanity and nature? Dystopian stories are prolific, and it’s not hard to understand why so many are fascinated by these doomsday tales. However, I once again implore anyone who is interested in this subject to Don’t Go There. Please remember that every thought, word and action MATTER. The more people who collectively focus on a barren wasteland for our future habitation, will continue to add energy to those horror shows. We humans have the power to change our world for the better just as much as for the worse. In fact, we are able to shift energy through our thoughts and vibrations which becomes especially valuable when significant groups of people meditate, chant or pray together with a high intention. This has nothing to do with religion, rather it is based on principles of the morphic field and harmonic resonance. As humans living on Earth in the 2020s, we must do everything we can to reverse the heating of Earth’s climate. This means we bravely face our situation, yet don’t allow ourselves to become overwhelmed by it. As we individually take steps to raise our own vibratory levels, as well as live more lightly on our planet, and come together regularly with others to collectively raise the Earth’s vibratory levels, we will make progress. I know it is so.
